Thanks for your interest in taking the LTC class.

Applicants for an original (first-time) LTC should submit an online application, and schedule an appointment for fingerprinting. Applicants must also complete four to six hours of classroom training, pass a written examination and pass a proficiency demonstration (shooting). All classroom and proficiency must be conducted in Texas by a LTC instructor certified by DPS.

Upon successful completion of the training class, the instructor should provide each student with a Certificate of Training (CHL-100). It is the student's responsibility to submit this form to DPS to complete the application. Instructors should not submit the form for the student.

There are some things that YOU need to do:

(You have 12 moths from application date to complete the steps. There are no refunds from the state whether they issue a LTC License or not.)

  1. Make application online with DPS. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us
(print out receipt and SAVE IT) It is not required that you do this first, But I think it speeds up the process. You can take the class before you make online application, however if the state turns you down the class fee is not refundable.
  2. After online application is complete, you will need to get fingerprinted. They may direct you to a location, or you can go to Idento: http://ibtfingerprint.com/locations/?st=tx to find the location that works best for you. Idento will need your application number at the time of your fingerprinting, so remember to take that with you.

When this is complete we are ready to continue with Class Room and Range Qualification (proficiency) requirements needed to obtain your LTC.

The Class Room part will run about 4-6 hours. Range time, lunch, breaks, test and shooting proficiency are not included in this time. This is Class Room Time only, so plan on a full day. I am flexible about doing this part when it best fits your schedule. We can determine that when you are ready to take the class.

The time from all forms being received by the DPS, to you receiving your license is taking 30 to 45 days.
No, you cannot carry until you get it.

Be prepared to answer these questions, both for your own and my awareness. It will help us assess what is needed to make the range part of the class safer!
  • Do you own a hand gun. If yes what kind?
  • How would you describe your proficiency skills with it?
Answer this question for yourself!!!!
  • Do you have any moral, spiritual or religious reason that you could not Use DEADLY force if threatened with Deadly Force?
    (Possibly Kill another Human Being)

If you are not comfortable with using a hand gun I also teach a NRA Basic Hand Gun and Safety class where you will learn to safely handle, fire, store and clean a hand gun.

If you need help or have questions on any of these steps let me know.

Thank you,
Dan DaCosta
